Repost! - Tips for Living Kidney Donors (In No Particular Order)

I thought it might be a good idea to re-post this entry. It has had a lot of very positive feedback, and seems to have helped people, so I'd like to keep it at the top of the page!  

Hoping this will be of service to anyone who is donating, or having any kind of surgery, really!




1. Patience – Be patient with yourself! Everyone heals at their own pace. It can be frustrating and depressing to not feel 100% after surgery but it will get a little better every day. Instead of thinking about all the things you can't do yet, take comfort in the progress you have made.

2. You Are What You Eat! – Eat healthy foods that will give you energy and help your body heal. Small meals spread throughout the day will help you feel less bloated. 

3. Slip On Shoes – After surgery you probably won’t want to bend over to tie shoe laces or pull a pair of tight shoes on. Make sure you have slippers for the hospital that you won’t miss when you leave (because you probably won’t want anything that touched the floor of a hospital in your house), and comfortable slip-ons for when you get home.

4. Ask for Help – It’s hard to learn when to ask for help, but after surgery this is a lesson you will learn very quickly. You will need help with everything … and I mean everything. Even reaching for something can be very painful if you reach too far. When in doubt - ask for help. Even if it’s just moral support, or you need a hug.

5. Walk Walk Walk – I can’t stress this enough. Walking is your new best friend. It is hard to do but it will help your recovery so much. Get up as soon as you can, and walk as much as you can. Your body will thank you for it!

6. Drink Drink Drink – Another thing I can’t stress enough. Drink every chance you get. Warm water or tea … no cold water! It helps your one remaining kidney do its job better, and gets your insides working properly again. Yes – you will have to pee a lot. But guess what? You get up and walk when you pee! Drinking helps you walk, and walking helps you heal faster!

7. Don’t Overdo It – Know your limits. Don’t push your body to the point where you might hurt yourself. Listen to the signals your body is giving you. If you’re tired, sleep. If you are in pain, rest for a while. The ability to listen to yourself is one of the best skills you can have in this process.

8. Get Fit – Be at your finest before surgery. The fitter you are the easier it will make your recovery. 

9. Comfy Pants – Make sure you have a lot of loose pants for post-surgery relaxing. Even 6-8 weeks after surgery I still couldn’t wear jeans for very long without getting uncomfortable. Buy some jogging pants or loose pajama pants that are a couple of sizes too big. There is a lot of bloating after surgery and you will want to be as comfortable as possible. Ever notice no one is wearing pants while they're in the hospital? There’s a reason they have those gowns … they’re comfy!

10. Pets – Pets can be wonderful, and a great source of comfort during the healing process BUT if you have a “lap dog”, or a dog that likes to jump up on you, it might be a good idea to consider having someone look after them while you are healing. Even feeding your pets can be a difficult task for the first few weeks. Bending down to fill a food or water dish, or taking Rover for a walk are going to be out of the question for a little while.  If you have any pets (including cats – changing kitty litter is pretty much impossible post-surgery!) arranging for help is important.

Creatinine, Kidneys, and Canadian Donation

I thought I'd share an experience I had in March of this year, that I kind of forgot about until now. It's a bit more relevant for anyone reading this from Canada - but still has a lot of good information for anyone who has donated (or is thinking about donating) a kidney.

Earlier this year I had to have my wisdom teeth removed. Before performing the operation, the oral surgeon had ordered some routine bloodwork to make sure I was ok to have the surgery. One of those tests was for creatinine. Creatinine is an important indicator of kidney function. Here is a link to an explanation of how that works (because I'm really bad at explaining these things):


I always request a copy of my blood tests, whatever they might be for, and to do this I had to meet with my regular family doctor (or GP - General Practitioner). He showed me the results which indicated that my creatinine was at 102. This is slightly higher than the normal range, so I expressed some concern, but my GP said it was not something to worry about and maybe over time it would come back down.

Because I'm never satisfied until I have all information possible, I took it upon myself to contact the transplant team at Toronto General, and ask them what my pre and post kidney donation creatinine levels were.

Pre-donation creatinine was around 60

Post-donation creatinine (up until around 2013) was around 71

So why would my creatinine have jumped from 71 - 102 between 2013 and 2016? (For anyone reading this from the U.S. that's like my creatinine going up from 0.79 - 1.15)

I went back to my GP, and said "Listen, I'm concerned here. I'd like to know what could have caused this, can we do some blood tests? I had a big meal of pot roast that day before having my blood taken, would that have anything to do with it??". He reiterated that it wasn't too far out of the normal range, and he told me something like a pot roast wouldn't make it spike at all, and that these things change over time and a blood test this soon wouldn't show any change. If I wanted to come back in a few months I could and we could check again.

Well at this point I was kind of freaking out. I was lucky enough to have an appointment with my Endocrinologist later that week. My Endocrinologist just happens to do kidney research on the side, so I figured he'd be the perfect person to ask about this. It's always good to get a second opinion. When I saw him, and I asked if it was cause for concern he said yes, and he ordered a swath of tests, both urine and bloodwork, and he told me to call in a couple of days for the results.

Test results came back within 48 hours - creatinine was back at 70. It was the pot roast!! My Endocrinologist said it must have been the meat. All of my lab results came back perfect. I guess the creatine in red meat can cause creatinine results to come back abnormally high. Good to know!

This experience shed light for me on what I think is a very big issue. In Canada we don't get any post-donation follow up with the transplant team after 1 year. After that last 1-year checkup, they put kidney donors into the care of their General Practitioner. This is problematic for a few reasons:

1 - If you don't take the initiative to push your GP to test you on an annual basis for your creatinine levels, and any other kidney-related tests (and something happens to you as it did to me, where it looks like something is now wrong) you have a very large dark area, where you can't see how your levels have changed over time. There's an information gap.

2 - Even if you do manage to get your GP to order these tests, they may interpret them incorrectly. GPs are not Nephrologists. You need follow up on an annual basis with someone who is a kidney specialist.

3 - I'm surprised the transplant team doesn't make a point of following up with kidney donors on a regular basis for the entirety of their lives, if only for research purposes. How is this lack of follow-up skewing statistics on donor health post-surgery?

Dan, on the other hand, here in the U.S., gets a yearly checkup with the transplant team forever. I'm not sure if that's something that's done here across the board, or if it has to do with his insurance company. I'm still learning about healthcare here in America. Either way, he's a lot better off because he gets to see how he's doing every year. If something were to change suddenly they would have a clear vision of how he was doing from year-to-year, and a Nephrologist would make an assesment of those results.

SO - The TL-DR version of this is:

1. If you live in Canada and you donated a kidney - if possible, request that your GP refer you to a Nephrologist for annual check-ups (after the 1 year of your transplant team following up with you has ended).

2. Do not eat pot roast (or any red meat, really) before having your creatinine checked!


Thankfully I'm perfectly happy and healthy, despite having a bit of a scare ;)

Kidney Love Update

It's been four years and four months since I donated a kidney, and it was hands-down the best decision of my life. Not only was it a completely unique and moving experience, but it gave another person life, and changed mine forever in so many ways.

Not the least of which is, this summer I married my best friend (and fellow kidney donor), Dan. If I had never donated a kidney, I never would have met him, and I couldn't be happier or more thankful.





As kidney donors, Dan and I do our best to eat nutritious meals, stay hydrated and exercise on a regular basis. We don't ever want to take our health for granted. We are so lucky to have found each other, and we hope to have a very long life together.

Jackie's blog, was such a huge help and inspiration to me when I was donating. She motivated me to create my own blog, in hopes of helping others the same way she helped me. I never could have known when I was creating this blog, that it would someday connect me to the man who would become my husband.

♥ Kidney Love ♥





Hello there internet! It's been a while. I think it's been about two years since my last post, and almost three since I donated my kidney.

Ok, so it's official everyone - Karma is a real thing! I am writing to report that I have found "Kidney Love". What is Kidney Love? It's when I donate a kidney and put myself on the internet, and someone else who donates a kidney finds my blog, we meet, and then we fall in love. It's true. And it couldn't be more amazing!




Dan donated a kidney to his father in September of 2014. We started talking in December of 2013, which is around the time he began the donation process. One night on his break at work he was surfing the web, looking for information on living donation and he came across my blog. He sent me off an email (As usual, I took way too long to reply - I think I got back to him about a month later) and we wrote back and forth up until his surgery.

After his donation we decided we should meet up, since Toronto and Pittsburgh are only 6 hours apart. I drove down to see him, and we ended up hitting it off! We can't believe our luck. We are absolutely perfect for each other. If this isn't karma, I don't know what is. And we have matching scars to boot!



So there you have it folks ... give love - receive love.


For those of you who are interested in how Dan is doing: Dan's recovery is as good as recovery can get. He has beat my record at almost every post-donation milestone. He was on his own at home after only 4 weeks. He was wearing jeans in the first few weeks after surgery (it took me 6 months to wear jeans comfortably!). He went back to work 6 weeks after donation, and ended up having to work 6 days a week almost right away. Like me, he lost a lot of weight after the surgery, but his energy levels are back up and he is gaining back the muscle he lost much faster than I ever did. He's doing so well. It's amazing to watch!

One Year Update!



It’s been a year and two months since I donated my kidney, and it has just flown by!

There is really not a lot of difference in my life pre and post-kidney donation. My body’s ability to heal seems almost magical. I am fairly active, and I am still doing all of the things I used to do before I gave away a kidney. Lots of yoga, and the occasional run. I do find that if I don't do some stretching at least a couple of times a week, the muscles around the areas where my incisions were get a little bit "tight". Yoga really helps with this, even if I can only manage to get to one class a week.

There are only a couple of dietary things I am careful about:

I keep track of how much protein I’m putting in my body. (Too much protein can be hard on your kidneys)

I stay away from too much salt and drink lots of water to keep myself hydrated. If I have any alcohol (which is very rarely) I make sure to drink an equal amount of water, and while I don’t usually drink anything with caffeine in it (I’m not a coffee drinker) I do have the occasional Diet Coke and I make sure to take in an equal amount of water when I do that as well. 

AND last but not least, I eat lots of leafy greens and fruits and veggies to help clean my blood.

But, when you think about it those are things that we should all be doing anyhow, right?  ;)

I went digging through my closet and I found my box of “kidney memories”. I spent a very nostalgic afternoon revisiting my whole experience, sitting on my bedroom floor looking through photos and cards. One card in particular stood out. It was from my recipient and her parents. It really hits me when I read that card, what this whole thing is really about. Wow! Time to get out the kleenex!!

All Better!


Time has gone by so quickly! I can hardly believe it’s been almost 6 months since my surgery! I had my 3 month check-up about 2 months ago (which would make it more of a 4 month check-up, I suppose) and the doctor gave me a clean bill of health. It was actually kind of anti-climactic to go all the way to the hospital and have them say “Yup – you’re healthy … that’s it!” After having been to Lynda’s appointments with her, my visit seemed quite brief. Lynda’s visits usually involved more than one doctor, and there were always extensive discussions on how she was feeling and the medications she was on. This is understandable, since her recovery is much more complicated than mine. My body was healthy to begin with, and aside from missing one kidney it didn’t have too much new stuff to get used to.

I’m feeling like my old self again. I can exercise (including sit-ups!), run, jump, go roller skating and do pretty much anything I used to do. I have been trying to exercise at least an hour a day for the last month or so. Even if it’s just some gentle stretching, I like to do something that gets me up and moving each day. 

My scars are almost gone, except the big one on my right side just above my bikini line. But it’s usually covered by underwear or bikini bottoms, and to be honest I don’t even notice it most of the time.

I am completely amazed by my body’s ability to heal. Sometimes it slips my mind for a few days that I had surgery, and then it dawns on me that part of my body is in someone else’s body right now. I sit and think about the whole experience, and I am humbled. I will always be grateful to have been able to be part of something so beautiful.

Feeling Better! (And Some Reflections)

7 Weeks After Surgery

Between 6 and 8 weeks my stomach started to feel normal again. I could stretch in the morning without feeling uncomfortable, and I could bend over a little and pick things up. Not heavy things, but if I dropped something on the floor I didn’t have to do the sideways-knee-bend-scoop.  The swelling went down and there was only a small dip where my incision was. If I did too much that day it would swell up, but otherwise it looked alright.

I was able to go to a very gentle yoga class, which really helped with my back. I had a lot of back pain from hunching over so much in those early days after surgery.  It was so wonderful to get back to the yoga studio, it really is a community. Everyone there welcomed me back, and there were lots of hugs. I told them all about my trip to Montreal and regaled them with tales of my surgery and recovery. I could really feel the positive energy in that first class. When you’re a room with that many people doing something collectively you can feel the energy. I left feeling so much stronger! That said, if you are reading this and thinking of going to a yoga class after surgery, make sure you don’t overdo it! I sat out on a few things, or had the teacher come and modify a pose for me. Know when something isn’t going to be ok for you. Your body will tell you where your edge is - you have to make sure you respect your limits. It takes a long time to recover from major surgery and just because the outside looks great doesn’t mean the inside is healing at the same rate. Some people’s bodies take a full year to heal from a kidney donation, and that’s ok! Let your body do what it needs to do.

At around the 8 week mark I started thinking about returning to work. Because my job is labor-intensive this was something I had to discuss with my doctor and really think about.  My family doctor informed me he was not qualified to make that decision and I would have to speak with a surgeon. I called the transplant team in Toronto and they made me an appointment with a surgeon here (so I wouldn’t have to drive all the way to Montreal again). Due to the nature of my work the surgeon decided it would be a good idea to wait another 8 weeks or so before going back.  I was still having a few problems. I would get exhausted very easily. My back hurt a lot. I had pain and swelling around my larger incision if I did too much walking or driving. Not huge pain but enough to make me feel like I wanted to lay down and have a nap. I would get uncomfortable if I had to sit in one position for a long time. Stuff like that. He said this was all normal. It felt really fantastic to hear someone say that! It can take a long time to recover from major surgery. He said to make sure I was staying active, try to do a little bit more every day, and come back to see him in a few weeks.

My advice to kidney donors considering going back to work would be this isn’t something that you can rush, especially if your job involves a lot of lifting or physical excursion.  If there is any possibility that you could do harm to yourself (or others) by trying to go back to work earlier than you are comfortable with, then I would say don’t do it. Listen to your body and take it easy if that’s what you need to do. Even if you are out of work for a little while longer, and you lose some money in the process that’s a small price to pay. Everyone heals at a different pace, don’t ignore the signs that you’re not 100% yet just because the piece of paper your doctor/surgeon gave you says you should be fully recovered at 6-8 weeks.

Being home from work can be frustrating. I think all humans need to feel productive in some way to be happy. I know I do. I have learned through this process that sometimes I need to let go of what I feel like I should be doing, and just enjoy what I am doing. It’s a small change in perspective that has a big impact. Getting some free time to myself is an unexpected perk that I am trying to enjoy to its fullest potential. While I don’t feel 100% yet, I can still enjoy spending time with the people I care about, and doing things that make me happy and help me to heal.

Being a kidney donor has been one of the best experiences of my life. It has made me a stronger person, and shown me the deep connection humans have with one-another. I will always be grateful for being able to participate in something so meaningful. 

I will try to keep this blog updated with new experiences and milestones. When I was going through the donation process my friend Jackie was a huge source of information and inspiration for me. Finding her blog helped me in so many ways. I hope I can pay it forward by doing the same for someone else!

Home Sweet Home & Healing

I decided to make the trip home to Toronto the Saturday following my post-op appointment. Mom drove and I sat in the passenger seat and did a lot of backseat driving. I’m not good at not being in control of the driver’s seat. If I’m in a car I want to be the one driving. Needless to say, between that and not feeling 100% awesome it was a bit of a stressful trip. We made good time though, and when we got there Lynda had cleaned the house and made up my bed in anticipation of my arrival. It was fantastic to come home and not have to do anything!

Over the next few weeks things progressed slowly but surely.  At first I was only comfortable walking around the house. Showering was still a little scary, but it got progressively better. I became more and more comfortable with getting my incisions wet. 

It took me about 3 or 4 weeks to be able to stand up completely straight, and walk around without getting a backache. It was sometimes difficult to stand up straight when I was walking so I would spend about 5 minutes laying flat on the floor first. It helped to stretch out the incision area and pulled my shoulders back so it was like I was standing up straight. Instead of gravity working against me, it worked for me to help get my shoulders in the right position. I started walking in the morning at the mall. It’s indoors and someone would at least be able to see me if I fell down or if something happened and I needed help. Plus it made it easy to push myself a little bit further every day. I could do one more lap if I was feeling up to it. 

At 5 weeks the swelling started to go down, and my energy started to pick up considerably. There was still some puffiness above my incision, which sort of made my stomach bulge out a little. It only showed when I stood up. The swollen area made a kind of a "shelf" where my stomach protruded and then went straight down underneath the incision. It made it look like I was a couple of months pregnant. This was bothersome to me, more visually than anything. I had got myself into pretty good shape before the surgery so I guess I was just being vain and wanting my tummy to be flatter.

The little ends of my dissolving stitches fell off around 5 weeks as well. This was a BIG relief. Being the hypochondriac that I am, I was starting to think they might have used the wrong kind. I was having visions of having stitches inside of me forever, or having to undergo some kind of painful procedure to have them removed. But lucky me … one day I just pulled on them and the little end popped off! I was elated and grossed out at the same time. Two feelings that seem to go together a lot during this whole experience.

I tried to take a photo every week, to two weeks. Unfortunately, I didn't write down exact dates when I was taking the photos.

Post-Op Appointment #1

Five days after leaving, I had to go back to Montreal for my post-op appointment with the surgeon and transplant nurse. Dad came to pick me up, and the ride there was significantly easier than the ride home had been. Bumps were bad but not nearly as bad as they had been that first day out of the hospital.  I had to fast, so as soon as I had my blood taken I had a snack, and we went upstairs to see Dr. Malaise and Julie. Julie asked me all kinds of questions about how I was feeling, how much I was pooping, what level my pain was at, was I walking and how much, how much pain medication was I taking, etc., etc. She weighed me as well. When I went into the hospital I was at around 126, and that day I weighed 117.  She also told me my kidney recipient was doing very well, and her new kidney was functioning at almost 100% already! 

Then I had my visit with Dr. Malaise. He had me lay down so he could inspect my wounds. He tapped around on my stomach, and I made sure to ask him if my blister was ever going to go away. He said the nurse probably shouldn’t have put that plastic bandage on it because it wasn’t able to dry out that way. So he pulled it off … AAAAAHHH! I was not ready for that! I thought for sure it would burst and become very painful (probably because of the internet “research” I had done on post-op blisters). Luckily, it was a tough blister and managed to stay intact. He then started to remove the steri-strips on all of my incisions. I had just barely managed to struggle through the blister tape removal. This was too much for me. I’m a giant wimp, and all I had eaten that day was a granola bar. I just couldn’t handle it. I grabbed the arm of his coat, looked up at him and said sheepishly “Do those really need to come off? Can’t I just leave them on until they fall off or something??”  He said my skin had reacted to them so it probably wasn’t a very good idea to leave them on, but if I wanted I could remove them in the shower with some warm water. I promised I would do so when I got home. After our meeting was over I tried to stand up and almost passed out. I had to sit back down until someone got me a glass of water. He said aside from being a little “over-sensitive” I was doing very well. 

On the way out Dad got me some orange juice, a granola bar and some almonds. He wheeled me to the parking lot, and this time I was able to walk to the car. We got a sandwich on the way home. That sandwich was the most delicious thing I had tasted in days. I enjoyed every bite!
I was glad to see my Mom’s house. I never wanted to see Montreal again!


That afternoon I removed the steri-strips in the shower. I was fighting off the feeling that I was going to pass out the whole time. Being around water freaked me out, letting the water touch my incisions freaked me out, and looking at them freaked me out even more. This was a triple-whammy. Afterwards I just laid in bed and let my heart rate return to normal. When I got up the courage to look at my stomach again when it was all dried off, it wasn’t all that bad. Definitely not the machete-fight-style scars I thought I was going to see. In fact, it looked a lot better without those strips. My blister still looked pretty gross, but a couple of my smaller incisions were almost completely healed on the outside.

Mom's House & The First Stages of Recovery

It was comforting to be in a familiar home, with no scary hospital sounds. That first night I just sat and listened to the silence … it was wonderful. 

Once I was home I needed help with everything. Getting in and out of a normal bed was complicated after having a bed that had magical buttons. I needed help to get up, sit down, go to the bathroom … everything! I am a very independent person so this was a bit of a departure for me. I got depressed for the first few days and would usually cry in the mornings. It was hard for me to not be able to do things by myself, and I felt like I wasn’t progressing fast enough. In retrospect this was kind of ridiculous. I just had major surgery for Pete’s sake! But at the time I was just frustrated and sad. I just wanted to be ok. I was being way too hard on myself. Everyone heals at their own pace. 
 
I got a little bit better every day. My appetite started increasing. I tried to stick to soft foods in those first few days because I still hadn’t had a #2 yet (I know … gross. But again, this is the reality of surgery). I ate a lot of steamed broccoli and oatmeal. I drank tons of hot water and tea. Warm liquids are excellent for your insides, they get stuff moving. My first BM after leaving the hospital was a milestone. I sent an email to my friend Jackie (who has also donated a kidney and has been a huge source of support for me). I knew she would appreciate the magnitude of this event. She did, and she gave me a big congratulations! I also called Megan, who has probably never discussed poop so much in her life up until this point. I think she was a little grossed out but she celebrated with me regardless, as any best friend would. 

 
I also did as much walking as possible. I would pace around the kitchen and into the living room. Around and around. I wasn’t really able to stand up completely straight for the first little while. I kind of hunched over my wound. I think it was more mental than anything. I would try to stand up a little bit straighter every day while I was walking. I could feel it stretching my belly out, which was uncomfortable, but if I just did it a little bit the next day I would be able to stand up straight that little bit more.
